Odelajja 2 Movie Review: A Grand Sequel with Mixed Results

“Odelajja 2,” the much-anticipated sequel, followed “Odelajja Railway Station,” which premiered directly on Aha OTT in August 2022 with Hebah Patel in the lead role. The first film was a mere one-and-a-half-hour watch, considered “okay” but ultimately not deserving of a sequel. However, the trailer for “Odelajja 2” hinted at a grander production, featuring impressive special effects and a strong background score, leading to high expectations.

Initial Impressions and Creative Team

With music by Anjani Soknath and a comprehensive involvement from Sampath Nandi, who handled the story, screenplay, dialogues, and directorial supervision, the film promised a robust cinematic experience. Upon watching, the special effects, Tamannaah’s introduction, and the movie’s initial setup were noted as highlights. However, while the first half was deemed “okay,” the second half failed to maintain interest, leading to an overall “below-average” feeling. Despite the evident high production costs, a lack of engaging content was a significant drawback.

Story Overview (Spoiler-Free)

The basic storyline, without giving away spoilers, revolves around the aftermath of the first part. It explores what happens when the people of Odelajja village decide to punish the villain from the first film, even after his death. This premise sets the stage for a continuation of the supernatural narrative.

The Positives: What Worked in Odelajja 2

  • Special Effects: The special effects were a major plus point, particularly noted in the scene where the village is bound in the second half, the snake chase sequence, and the initial punishment scene.
  • Continuation from Part 1: The sequel successfully established a smooth and engaging continuation from its predecessor.
  • Vasishta’s Voice: Vasishta’s voice provided a significant advantage, proving to be more effective and impactful than the film’s music in certain instances.
  • Story Development: Aspects of the story’s development were well-executed.
  • Performances: While supporting characters often had more screen presence than the main actors, Tamannaah’s performance as Bhairavi Akka, especially her introduction with the “Sathasahastram” chant, was commendable. She had a greater presence in the second half.
  • BGM: The background music, featuring some “Mangalavaram” tunes, managed to elevate a few scenes.
  • Cinematography & Production Values: The cinematography was superb, contributing to visually rich aesthetics. The production values were notably high, reflecting a significant investment.

The Negatives: Where Odelajja 2 Fell Short

  • Familiar Template: Despite being a continuation of the first part, the story followed a familiar and regular template: an incident in the village, the arrival of someone to deal with a spirit, and the subsequent events.
  • Arundhati Inspiration: Several scenes seemed heavily inspired by Anushka’s film “Arundhati,” diminishing originality.
  • Lack of Horror: The film failed to deliver on the horror front, with only Vasishta’s voice being genuinely scary. Some scenes meant to induce fear were not properly elevated.
  • Logical Inconsistencies (Plot Holes): The film suffered from numerous logical flaws and plot holes. Questions arose regarding the priest and others relieving themselves at a specific spot, how blood could penetrate so much soil, the excessive amount of blood, why the villain repeatedly emerged from bodies, how he was caught in the second murder, why he stayed at the scene, the lack of suspicion after two murders, and why CCTV footage shown to the public wasn’t presented to the police in a modern setting.
  • Performance Issues: Sreekanth Ayyangar’s acting in crying scenes often felt like overacting.
  • Unengaging Second Half: The entire second half, even after Tamannaah’s entry, failed to create much interest or thrill, as her presence did not significantly impact the narrative or provide assistance.

Is It Family Friendly?

For family viewing, caution is advised. Some “first night” scenes and dialogues in the first half might be uncomfortable for certain audiences. Viewers are encouraged to decide for themselves.

Final Verdict & Rating

Overall, “Odelajja 2” can be appreciated for its visual richness, a few standout scenes, and its special effects. While the first half was acceptable, the second half’s lack of a strong and thrilling narrative, despite Tamannaah’s presence, was a significant letdown. Had the second half been stronger in content, the film would have been much better.

My Rating: 2.5/5
