“Bloody Beggar” Review: A Deep Dive into Kevin’s Latest Film
The film “Bloody Beggar” was released in theatres with a runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes, in both Tamil and Telugu. It did not perform well theatrically. Currently, the movie is streaming on Prime Video in Tamil, and since it was released in Telugu theatres, the Telugu audio is expected to be added soon.
Initial Impressions: A Mixed Bag
Watching the film, there were moments of enjoyment, but at the same time, certain parts, especially in the second half, became frustrating. The overall experience was a blend of engaging segments and tedious stretches.
Kevin’s Performance: The Undeniable Highlight
Hero Kevin took on a full-fledged, deglamourised role as a beggar, which is a great feat. He truly “nailed the role,” with his expressions being particularly commendable. His script selection for this role also stood out as a positive aspect.
Storyline & Execution: From Beggar to Revenge
The basic story revolves around a beggar, driven by hunger, who hides in a mansion, and what unfolds afterwards. The narrative began well by portraying real-life beggars. However, once the beggar enters the mansion, the story seemed to lose its initial focus. The intended elements of emotion, action, and dark comedy were left incomplete. The second half, in particular, transforms into a revenge story. This shift and the subsequent dragging of the plot made the second half feel stretched, ending akin to “Bharateeyudu 2 old man” (implying a long, drawn-out conclusion).
What Worked Well: Positives of “Bloody Beggar”
Undoubtedly, Kevin’s performance is one of the major highlights of the film. The story itself is different, even if its execution had flaws. The music is distinct, and Kevin’s choice of script is notable. Specific scenes that were well-received include a mini-flashback of the beggar accompanied by a song in the second half, the intermittent emotional touches, and the climax. The first 30 minutes of the first half were also very good. Most of the movie is set in a large house, resembling the Hyderabad Secretariat, and the cinematography was well done, with the film being beautifully shot. A car accident scene in the second half was also highlighted as being well-executed.
Areas for Improvement: The Drawbacks
A significant minus point is the excessive dragging of the story. It felt as though the creators intentionally stretched the film to avoid an early conclusion. Kevin, who begins as the hero, unfortunately, gets relegated to a side actor’s role in the second half, only to reappear prominently towards the end. There was a lack of connection with the characters introduced in the second half, suggesting miscasting. Telugu actor 30 Years Prudhvi is present but does not offer much entertainment. The dark comedy element was a major concern, as it seemed to strip the story of its seriousness, lacking both suspense and effective comedy. Questions arise regarding the beggar’s prolonged stay in the mansion and the characters’ behaviour for money, leading to a feeling of the second half being unnecessarily drawn out.
Is “Bloody Beggar” Family-Friendly?
Yes, the film can be watched with family as there is no adult content.
Final Verdict & Rating
Given Kevin’s performance and a few enjoyable moments, “Bloody Beggar” can be given a try. Based on personal opinion, the movie receives a rating of 2.5 out of 5.
