Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) – Miami’s Finest Are Back, But Is the Magic Recaptured?
Seventeen years after the last wild ride, Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are back in Bad Boys: Ride or Die. This time, the heat is on for a different reason: their beloved police captain is caught in a drug cartel scandal, casting a shadow over their entire department. With their badges revoked and Miami too hot to handle, Mike and Marcus are on the run, determined to clear their captain’s name and take down the real bad guys.
The film stays true to the franchise’s formula – an explosive mix of action sequences, high-octane chases, and the signature bickering banter between the two leads. Will Smith effortlessly slips back into the role of the smooth-talking, risk-taking Mike Lowrey. Martin Lawrence is in top comedic form, delivering laugh-out-loud moments with his exasperated reactions to Mike’s antics.
The action sequences are impressive, with directorial duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah bringing their frenetic energy to car chases, shootouts, and hand-to-hand combat. The film boasts some truly breathtaking stunts, pushing the limits of what’s possible on screen.
However, Ride or Die isn’t without its flaws. The plot feels a bit derivative, borrowing elements from previous entries in the series. Some of the jokes fall flat, relying on tired gags and stereotypes. While the film maintains a good pace, it can feel bloated at times, especially during the exposition-heavy first act.
The chemistry between Smith and Lawrence remains the heart of the film. Their camaraderie feels genuine, even after all these years. The addition of Vanessa Hudgens and Alexander Ludwig as new partners for Mike and Marcus adds a fresh dynamic, although their characters don’t get as much development.
So, is Bad Boys: Ride or Die a worthy successor to the legacy? It’s a fun, action-packed ride that delivers the nostalgia factor for fans of the franchise. However, it doesn’t quite recapture the magic of the originals. If you’re looking for a good summer blockbuster with explosions, witty banter, and a healthy dose of Miami swagger, then Ride or Die won’t disappoint. But for those seeking a more groundbreaking or innovative action film, this might feel like a familiar tune on repeat.
