Aranmanai 4: A Familiar Haunt with Mixed Results
The wait is over for fans of the Tamil horror-comedy franchise, Aranmanai. The fourth installment, directed by Sundar C, hit theaters on May 3, 2024, promising another chilling yet laugh-out-loud adventure. But does Aranmanai 4 manage to scare and tickle audiences in equal measure, or is it a retread of well-worn tropes?
The story follows a man, played by Santhosh Prathap, who is thrown into a world of suspicion and terror after his sister’s mysterious death. Determined to uncover the truth, he ventures into a haunted palace, awakening a vengeful spirit known as Baak. This flesh-eating, shape-shifting entity sets off a chain of chaotic events, with the hero needing to enlist the help of both good and comedic forces to vanquish the evil.
Familiar Territory
For fans of the Aranmanai series, the plot of the fourth film might feel a bit repetitive. The good versus evil trope remains the central conflict, and the haunted palace setting is a familiar backdrop. Even the humor relies heavily on slapstick antics from a troupe of comedians, including Yogi Babu, Kovai Sarala, and VTV Ganesh. While some of their gags land, others fall flat, feeling like a recycled version of jokes from previous films.
A Few Fresh Scares
However, Aranmanai 4 isn’t entirely devoid of surprises. The introduction of Baak as the antagonist injects a new level of fear. The flesh-eating aspect adds a grotesque edge to the horror, and the special effects, while not groundbreaking, are a step up from the previous installments. There are also moments of genuine suspense, particularly in the first half of the film, that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The Leading Ladies Shine
The performances in Aranmanai 4 are a saving grace. Tamannaah Bhatia and Raashi Khanna deliver strong portrayals of the female leads, bringing emotional depth and action hero vibes to their respective roles. Santhosh Prathap holds his own as the protagonist, navigating the film’s comedic and dramatic moments with ease.
The Verdict: A Fun, But Formulaic Outing
Aranmanai 4 is a horror-comedy that delivers exactly what you’d expect from the franchise. It’s predictable, relies heavily on familiar tropes, and the humor is hit-or-miss. However, there are some genuinely scary moments, a refreshing new villain, and strong performances from the leading cast. If you’re a die-hard Aranmanai fan looking for a dose of nostalgia and some light chills, this film won’t disappoint. But for those seeking something fresh and innovative, Aranmanai 4 might feel like a haunted house you’ve already explored.
