Laandhar (2024): A Flickering Flame – A Review
Laandhar, the Tamil crime thriller released in June 2024, sets out to be a gripping cat-and-mouse chase between a determined cop and a cunning serial killer. While the film manages to deliver some suspenseful moments, it ultimately falters due to a weak script and uneven execution.
Plot and Performances
The story centers around Inspector Aravind (Vidarth), who finds himself immersed in a harrowing situation when a masked killer begins a murderous spree. As Aravind dives deeper into the investigation, the stakes escalate dramatically when his wife, Jaanu (Sahana Manju), goes missing. Now, Aravind must race against time not only to apprehend the killer but also to rescue Jaanu before it’s too late.
Vidarth delivers a commendable performance as the determined Aravind, effectively conveying the officer’s resolve and desperation. Sahana Manju impresses in her role, portraying Jaanu with strength and resilience. However, the supporting cast, including Nakul and Swetha Dorathy, though competent, doesn’t quite shine as expected.
Screenplay and Technical Aspects
One of Laandhar’s significant drawbacks is its screenplay. The narrative struggles to strike a balance between the thriller elements and Aravind’s personal journey. Subplots involving secondary characters feel unnecessary and disrupt the flow of the main investigation. Moreover, the killer’s motives remain underdeveloped, making it challenging to empathize with the character or become invested in their capture.
Technically, Laandhar is proficient. Praveen’s background score effectively enhances tension during chase sequences, and Gnanasowndar’s camerawork serves its purpose adequately. However, these technical strengths are insufficient to elevate the film beyond its mediocrity.
Final Verdict
Laandhar isn’t a complete failure. It may appeal to fans of Vidarth and enthusiasts of police procedurals who seek mild entertainment. However, for viewers expecting a truly gripping and suspenseful experience, Laandhar disappoints. Despite its occasional brightness, the film fails to provide a steady source of illumination, much like its namesake “lantern.”
Recommendation: If you’re a fan of Vidarth or enjoy straightforward crime thrillers, Laandhar might be worth a watch. However, for a more compelling cinematic experience, consider other options.
