Rathnam (2024): A Flawed Masala Mix
Vishal and director Hari reunite for Rathnam, offering audiences a promise of adrenaline-fueled action wrapped in a masala extravaganza. While the film certainly delivers on the action front, its narrative struggles to find its footing, grappling with pacing issues, an overloaded plot, and a reliance on tried-and-tested clichés.
A Familiar Hero’s Journey
At the heart of the story is Rathnam (Vishal), a hot-headed vegetable vendor known for his knack for trouble. His life takes an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with Paneer Selvam (Samuthirakani), a local tough guy with political ambitions. Rathnam soon finds himself in the thick of the political and gangster underworld, serving as Paneer Selvam’s right-hand man. Enter Mallika (played by…), whose presence adds a romantic twist to Rathnam’s already tumultuous journey.
Strengths: Action with a (Slight) Twist
Despite its flaws, Rathnam manages to shine in its action sequences. Director Hari orchestrates some breathtaking fight scenes, including a standout single-shot sequence that combines car chases, explosions, and hand-to-hand combat. Vishal throws himself into the physicality of the role, delivering a performance that will undoubtedly please fans of his action hero persona.
Weaknesses: More Masala, Less Substance
However, the film’s downfall lies in its screenplay, which attempts to juggle too many elements. While the first half sets the stage effectively, the second half becomes mired in convoluted subplots and underdeveloped characters. The comedic interludes, courtesy of Yogi Babu and the supporting cast, often feel forced, disrupting the film’s overall rhythm.
Rathnam also leans heavily on the familiar tropes of the masala genre, from the hero’s ascent to power to the obligatory romantic subplot and the inevitable showdown with the villain. While there are hints of moral ambiguity in Rathnam’s choices, they are overshadowed by the film’s emphasis on spectacle over substance.
The Final Verdict: A Fun Distraction, But Not Much More
In the end, Rathnam serves its purpose as a popcorn entertainer, offering viewers an escape into a world of high-octane action and larger-than-life characters. However, for those seeking a deeper story or more nuanced character development, the film may fall short of expectations. It’s a decent masala flick, but one that ultimately fails to leave a lasting impression.
